Ric Flair Claims WWE & AEW Couldn’t Afford Him If He Was 35-Years-Old

Ric Flair will make his in-ring return on July 31st. The match will be held as part of the huge Starrcast wrestling convention. There is no denying just how big a name Flair remains in the pro wrestling business.

While speaking on the Two Man Power Trip, Ric Flair professional wrestling tickets explained how pro wrestling companies can afford him today. The Dirtiest Player In The Game then claimed that WWE and AEW couldn’t afford him if he was 35.

“If I was 35 years old right now, they wouldn’t be able to afford me, and boy they need help with the ratings right now, both of them [laughs]. Those written interviews, you can tell a mile away whether the kids feel it or not, it’s a lot of pressure to read something that you don’t actually feel in your heart. That’s a big difference. If they are thinking about what they are handed to memorize, they put no emotion into it.

That’s just talking generically. It doesn’t sell tickets. When The Rock comes back to wrestle Roman (Reigns), that will sell tickets. When Steve Austin came back, that sold tickets. It’s a different timeframe. The talent is great, make no mistake, there are some great wrestlers. (Randy) Orton, my daughter [Charlotte Flair], Sasha Banks, AJ Styles. There’s a list of a great top ten between the two companies, but the events sell themselves now, as much as the wrestlers do. I don’t think they turn them loose enough. They want to make sure they get the right advertisers, everyone has to be happy. It’s a whole different world. I still love it, I just feel that the guys who are really great like Randy and my daughter, they are held back because they only want people to go that far.

They don’t want anybody to become The Rock, that’s going to walk off or become Steve, who can say, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ Back in the day with Hulk (Hogan), he’d say, ‘I don’t want to do it,’ he had that kind of power. I don’t know if that’s healthy, but Vince won’t let that happen again. He won’t let anyone get in a position where they can say, ‘Hey, see ya.’ I understand that, it’s business,

This section covers WWE Superstars from all brands, including Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and NXT UK.’); //]]>

Bayley — Last July, Bayley underwent surgery to fix a torn ACL. She was slated to be out for roughly 9 months. Dave Meltzer vaguely reported she would return by February, but March would be more likely. Bayley responded sarcastically: “OMG GOOD TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE ALWAYS ACCURATE.” she is saying Meltzer does not know what he’s talking about and is just making things up. There have been no recent updates on this. She has been sidelined for almost a full year.

Big E — As many will know, he suffered a serious neck injury from a belly-to-belly suplex during a match involving Ridge Holland. Despite this, he was in good spirits, and later said he wouldn’t need surgery. A former WWE doctor said there is a chance he would need to retire, given the seriousness of fracturing his C1 and C6 vertebrae. There remains a slight chance if his C1 vertebrae don’t heal properly.

There are positive signs, though, as we reported Big E has removed his neck brace. It may still be a while until we see him return to the ring, but at least he’s on the road to recovery.

Cody Rhodes — One of the most obvious injuries because of its graphic nature, is Cody’s torn pectoral. Despite the grossly discolored bruising from his right pec and up his arm, he worked the Hell in a Cell match with Seth Rollins and has since had surgery. He’s expected to be out for roughly 9 months.

Gable Steveson — He follows in the footsteps of Kurt Angle as an Olympic Gold Medalist in freestyle amateur wrestling, and Brock Lesnar as an NCAA Division champion from the University of Minnesota. WWE jumped at the chance of signing him to a contract, assigning him to the Monday Night Raw brand.

He recently won the NCAA Heavyweight Championship for a second time and then teased a WWE appearance before removing the tweet. Gable appeared on both nights of WrestleMania. On night 2, he confronted Chad Gable and gave him a suplex.

Io Shirai — The former NXT Women’s Champion hasn’t been on TV for several months, and this is because of an ankle injury. There aren’t many details about it, other than WWE hopes she will return ‘by the summer’.

Nikkita Lyons — She has taken NXT by storm in 2022, and is one of its fastest rising stars. Lyons was heavily favored to win the NXT Breakout Tournament, but she suffered a partial MCL tear and sprain. She appeared on last week’s episode, working out to aid her recovery and promised to return soon.

Odyssey Jones — In January, while filming a match with Saurav for the now-canceled 205 Live show, Odyssey suffered a ruptured patellar tendon. The match had to be stopped and didn’t make it to air. He was written off NXT TV after being attacked by Joe Gacy & Harland. Odyssey has since had surgery and is recovering. There’s still no word on when he is scheduled to return.

Randy Orton — About a year ago, Orton made comments about the bumps he’s taken over the years catching up to him. With all the times he’s landed on his back delivering the RKO, the impacts have taken a toll, and he knew that eventually, he would need to take time off. After RK-Bro lost the Raw Tag Team titles to The Usos, Orton took his time to allow his back to recover. While saddened by the news, Riddle continues to remind the WWE Universe how great his best friend is.

Rick Boogs — We couldn’t miss what happened to him, as he suffered a torn quad patella at WrestleMania 38. He posted this recovery update video last month.

Queen Zelina & Carmella — An injury some fans may have missed is one currently sidelining the Queen of the Ring. In late May, we reported Zelina has suffered a knee injury that required surgery and is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks. Carmella hasn’t wrestled since WrestleMania. While she’s featured on her new TV show with husband Corey Graves, it’s not known why she isn’t wrestling at the moment.

Sasha Banks & Naomi — You’d have to be living under a rock to not know what’s going on with the former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. They are suspended for walking out on an episode of Raw because of creative differences. Sasha Banks is supposedly released, but there has yet to be any confirmation from her or the company: WWE Reportedly Released Sasha Banks “Some Weeks Ago”

Zoey Stark — Back in November, the former NXT Tag Team Champion (w/ Io Shirai) was attacked backstage by Toxic Attraction. It was a quick moment, but one which wrote her off. There was no official word on what the injury was, but Stark gave us an update a few months ago. She is still recovering from a torn ACL in her knee.

Authors Note: With Roman Reigns’ part-time contract and WWE’s lack of challengers for the undisputed championship, these injuries couldn’t have been anymore poorly timed. It would have benefitted the main event scene had Randy Orton or Cody Rhodes been available. Therefore, WWE had to bring back Brock Lesnar to fill in for the short term. On the women’s side, Bayley’s return would be appreciated, and it surely can’t be that long now?
